Biden criticizes Putin for not attending COP26 summit, Russia retaliates!

The Russian government has reacted to criticism by US President Joe Biden of President Vladimir Putin for his absence at the COP26 summit in Glasgow. The Kremlin insists that Russia is serious about climate change.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said "we disagree" when asked about Biden's accusations that China and Russia failed to show leadership on climate change.

"We certainly don't take the events at Glasglow lightly, but Russia's move is consistent and thoughtful and serious," he added.

Earlier on Tuesday, Biden criticized Putin for not attending a climate conference in Glasgow and alluded to Russia's burning forests. "He has a serious problem, a serious climate problem, and he doesn't want to do anything about it," Biden said.

Apart from Putin, Biden also criticized Chinese President Xi Jinping for not attending the COP26 summit.

Peskov stated that Moscow is well aware of the impacts of climate change and in fact faces "more serious challenges" than any other country.

"Forests are really burning. But don't forget that forests are burning in California, forests are burning in Turkey and in other countries," Peskov said.

Peskov further added that Russia has taken a "very responsible" position on climate change with long-term plans to reduce emissions and diversify energy sources.

According to Peskov, Biden may not have been aware of the plan when he spoke. He said that climate issues would be discussed when the two leaders met in person. "President Putin will have a good opportunity to tell President Biden about what we are doing with the climate," Peskov said.

Last month Peskov had said that Putin would not attend the COP26 summit. He did not give a reason, although Putin has rarely traveled outside Russia since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, except for a summit with Biden in Geneva in June.
